Om Shanti Om vs Sawariya: A Comparison

As OSO and Saawariya battle it out on the big screen this Diwali, we try and analyze the prospects of the two biggies.

OSO Plot

The film begins in 1970, with a junior artist, Omprakash Makhija (SRK) and his unspoken love for a top actress, Shantipriya (Deepika) who in turn loves the then reigning Bollywood big shot, Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal). Om gets killed in a scuffle with Mehra but is re-incarnated as today's Bollywood star while Deepika plays the regular college-going girl. SRK is shown hallucinating about his past life (remember Karan Arjun…Prem?) It all leads to a musical climax ala Subhash Ghai's Karz.

Saawariya Plot

Saawariya is about the lives of the two protagonists played by debutants Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor waiting for the love of their life to come to them. It is based on Dostoyevsky’s short story White Nights, which revolves around the life of the narrator who spends four consecutive nights in the company of a girl. On the fourth night, the narrator does profess his love to the girl but her lover comes to her and forgetting about the narrator, she leaves with her lover. Apart from the two new faces characters, Rani Mukherji and Salman Khan play pivotal roles in the movie.

Likely highlights

OSO

SRK’s six pack abs

Song featuring 31 stars

SRK’s chemistry with Deepika. He has a habit of making it work with first timers opposite him – Rani in KKHH and Sushmita in Main Hoon Na

Shreyas Talpade can be banked upon to deliver an impressive performance

Farah Khan’s direction. She proved with MHN that she is competent at delivering a masala flick
SAAWARIYA

The novelty factor surrounding the star debutants Ranbir and Sonam Kapoor

Ranbir Kapoor’s baring his backside like his father did in Bobby
The music which is already making waves

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s typical big and elaborate sets with immense detailing

Salman and Rani’s presence
Possible weak links

OSO

Arjun Rampal is yet to prove his credentials as an actor

Reports of it being a Karz remake might go against the film

SAAWARIYA

Bhansali’s known tendency of concentrating a bit too much on the intricacies which can get irritating at times

Too much expectation from the two newcomers

Interesting Links: OSO and Saawariya

Shah Rukh Khan made his debut in Deewana (1992) which had Ranbir Kapoor’s dad Rishi Kapoor in the lead

Salman and Rani will be seen in both films – in a special song in OSO and in important roles in Saawariya

Deepika Padukone and Ranbir Kapoor were once a couple
