Bangalore had a very special surprise visitor in town on Wednesday.

Superstar Rajnikant, who celebrated his 57th birthday on that day — 12 December — spent a quiet birthday in the city in the company of his daughters and son-in-law.

While Rajni fans all over India celebrated Thalaivar’s birthday in a big way, distributing sweets, performing poojas and organising blood donation camps, Rajnikant himself spent it in the quiet of a city five-star hotel.

Sources tell BT that the actor arrived incognito, and came to the coffee shop for dinner. Fans who recognised the family sitting quietly in a corner were thrilled, and several went up to him to request for autographs and photographs. Although Rajni was clearly in a relaxed mood, far removed from his film star avatar, he was very courteous and obliged everyone, say onlookers. In fact, when the hotel security expressed concern at the intrusion, he waved them away and proceeded to pose with his fans.

Later, while he dined on chicken tikka masala, prawn curry and naan , the hotel quickly organised some flowers and a surprise birthday cake for him to cut, which he did. “It was a chocolate truffle cake with strawberries,” says assistant restaurant manager Mohit Sehgal. Rajni, it is said, expressed his enjoyment of the lush greenery all around in Bangalore, and the current cool weather in the city. He spent most of Thursday in his room, shut away from the public. “His birthday was a family affair,” says Sehgal, “Though I’ve never met him before, he seemed so down-to-earth and quiet.”
